How Old Do You Have to Be to Play Roblox?
Roblox does not have one minimum age; instead, it gives each age group a different kind of account. Children aged 5 to 8 get Roblox Kids accounts, ages 9 to 15 get Roblox Select accounts, and older users get standard accounts, with chat and other features unlocked by Roblox’s age check.
Roblox account types by age
| Age | Account type | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 8 | Roblox Kids | Only games with the lowest maturity ratings; chat off unless a parent turns it on |
| 9 to 15 | Roblox Select | Games up to a Moderate maturity rating; chat limited by age group |
| 16 and older | Standard account | Full access, with communication features requiring an age check |
Exact ages can vary by region, based on local rules.
What does the age check do?
Since January 2026, every user must complete an age check to use communication features such as in-game chat and voice chat. The check estimates your age from a short video selfie, or uses ID verification, and then lets you chat only with users in similar age groups and with trusted connections.
What can parents control?
Parents can link a parental control account to their child’s account and manage its settings: turning chat on or off, lowering the maturity level of games, blocking specific games, and setting limits on spending.
Is Roblox safe for young children?
Roblox’s age-based accounts are designed so that the youngest players only reach games that passed Roblox’s review process for their age. Most safety experts still recommend that parents set up parental controls and talk with their children about playing online.
