How to Make a Roblox Game: A Beginner's Walkthrough
You make a Roblox game in Roblox Studio, Roblox’s free building tool: you place parts to build the world, add Luau scripts to make things happen, test it, and publish it to Roblox. A first playable game, such as a short obby, takes an afternoon.
What you need before you start
You need 2 things: a Roblox account and Roblox Studio installed on a Windows PC or a Mac. You do not need to know how to code to begin, although scripting is what makes a game interesting.
Step 1: Choose a template
Open Roblox Studio and choose New. Start with the Baseplate template, a flat, empty world. The Obby and other game templates are useful later to see how finished games are put together.
Step 2: Build with parts
Parts are the basic blocks of every Roblox world.
- On the Home tab, select Part to insert a block.
- Use the Move, Scale and Rotate tools to shape and place it.
- In the Properties window, set Anchored to true so the part does not fall or get pushed around.
- Change Color and Material to style it.
Repeat until you have a course of platforms for your players.
Step 3: Add your first script
Scripts are written in Luau, Roblox’s programming language. To make a part that resets any player who touches it, a “kill brick”:
- Insert a part and anchor it.
- Right-click the part in the Explorer window and choose Insert Object > Script.
- Replace the code with:
local part = script.Parent
part.Touched:Connect(function(hit)
local humanoid = hit.Parent:FindFirstChildOfClass("Humanoid")
if humanoid then
humanoid.Health = 0
end
end)The script waits for anything to touch the part, checks whether it belongs to a character, and sets that character’s health to zero. Our guide on how to script on Roblox explains each line.
Step 4: Playtest
Press Play (or F5) on the Test tab. Studio drops you into your game as a player so you can try every jump. Press Stop to go back to editing.
Step 5: Save and publish
Choose File > Publish to Roblox, give the game a name and a description, and confirm. The game is now saved on Roblox, but only you can play it. Making it public has requirements since May 2026, explained in how to make a Roblox game public.
How long does it take to make a Roblox game?
A simple obby takes a few hours. A game with shops, saved progress and many levels takes weeks or months, and the biggest games on Roblox are built by teams over years. Starting small and publishing often is the fastest way to learn.
