How to Make UGC on Roblox

By Blox Handbook•

UGC on Roblox means user-generated avatar items: 3D accessories, layered clothing, heads and bodies that creators make and sell on the Marketplace. You make them in a 3D program such as Blender, check them in Roblox Studio, and publish them once your account meets Roblox’s requirements.

What counts as UGC on Roblox?

Roblox’s UGC covers 4 main types of avatar items:

  • Rigid accessories, such as hats, glasses and backpacks, which keep their shape.
  • Layered clothing, such as jackets and dresses, which stretch to fit any body.
  • Bodies and dynamic heads, which replace the avatar’s own parts.
  • Makeup, applied to dynamic heads.

Flat 2D shirts and pants are a separate, simpler category; see how to make clothes on Roblox.

How to make a UGC item

The usual workflow has 4 stages:

  1. Model the item in a 3D program such as Blender or Maya, following Roblox’s specifications for that item type (size, polygon count, textures).
  2. Import it into Roblox Studio and fit it to a test avatar. For accessories, Studio’s accessory fitting tools help you place and size it.
  3. Validate it. Roblox’s UGC validation system checks every avatar item against the specifications for its type before it can be uploaded, so errors appear here rather than after you pay.
  4. Upload and publish it to the Marketplace, set its price, and put it on sale.

What do you need to publish UGC?

Publishing avatar items requires an account that meets Roblox’s creator requirements, which include identity verification and, for selling, a subscription. Publishing also costs fees in Robux that depend on the item type. The Creator Hub shows the exact requirements and fees for your account before you confirm, and they change from time to time.

How long does it take to learn UGC?

If you already know a 3D program, a simple rigid accessory can be ready in a day. Layered clothing takes longer, because it needs cages that tell Roblox how the item wraps around different bodies. Roblox’s creator documentation has step-by-step tutorials for each type.
